Pulling the Cord

The best plain-speaking guide to stopping traditional technology procurement, before it leaves the station.

The Pulling the Cord alpha was a test of a one hour talk we held on 20 March and 10 April 2024 covering everything we’ve learned, and everything that works, to influence switching to user-centered, agile delivery in government.

Participants received a copy of the recording, and a copy of the presentation.

When’s the next session?

We’ve finished testing Pulling the Cord and plan to hold the next session in May 2024.

As a…

manager responsible for program, finance or budget, or project management, who’s planning an upcoming IT procurement

I want to…

effectively present what we must do differently, and why, to my peers and leadership

So that…

we stand a chance of delivering a modern, agile, user-centered government service, instead of business as usual.

What’s this all about?

We’ve spent a long time practicing and learning about what it takes to turn traditional technology procurements into an agile, user-centered service.

It’s really, really hard.

But there are ways of making it easier.

We know how to talk about the problems and challenges of the environment you’re in, and acknowledge them.

We know how to show that everyone’s on the same side.

We know how to describe to leadership, in a clear and understandable way, what’s needed to change.

So we thought it was high time we taught other people how to do it, too.

First, we’re testing this out with a version for small groups. We’ll see how that goes, then we plan to adapt what we’ve been doing in our meetings and presentations to executive leadership into a version for them, too.
